The Power of Television At Radiology Oncology

Bachianas Brasileiras No.5 - Hector Villa-Lobos

I'm one of the many musicians who play music in hospitals for the organization "Body & Soul, The Art of Healing." So I walk into the Radiology Oncology building say hi to the visible staff and get to playing music. I start with a somber piece "Bachianas Brazileiras No.5, by Hector Villa-Lobos"
All is going well, the people smile, I like it. An elder couple walks in sits and listens as they wait. The woman seems pleased with the music as I continue playing. Then this man comes in and changes the channel on the television from some Country Crock commercial to FOX News. No big deal this happens all the time here... Suddenly a man standing at the front desk holding a Zip-Lock bag full of pill bottles says "Woah! What happened?" as he gawks at the television. I look over at the TV and the elder couple excitedly get up and they fumble over each other (I thought they were going to trip over one another) to get a closer look at the grainy footage of a kid beating the crap out of another kid on a school bus. So I decided to take a photo of this precious moment.

"Uh-oh" I think to myself. "Here we go." Glancing back and forth from my beautifully hand crafted guitar neck to the T.V. I proceed to watch the video of this school bus beating. They play it, and play it again. Then a panel of three well dressed News anchors comment on it. I can't make out what they're saying as my guitar is much louder on my side of the room. Then they go back to the beating. I decide to play a little Flamenco in the spirit of this fiery moment. Then the billion dollar network switches back to the anchors who comment some more, but now they're playing the footage in slow motion as I improvise over E Major and F Major. They kept repeating the video over and over again, "And now lets watch it, but backwards and in slow motion". I wanted to stop playing and loudly ask "And what are we supposed to do about this? I think we should turn the TV off." But, I'm sure that would be quite offensive to the staff and waiting patients in the ironic light of some kid getting his face pummeled.

Violence happens to people every day, I don't see the point in repeating stuff like this over and over again. Should this be an epidemic, a sudden outbreak where every 20th school bus across the nation was having a beating in it. Then I'd say that's news worthy of a billion dollar network. Otherwise this News belongs only in the community in which it happened, as we can't do anything from here but gawk, and it isn't showing us how awful the world is. It's merely showing us how awful THAT school bus was (but television makes the world right?). So I continued providing soundtrack music to the re-play, and slow motion re-play of the video until it came time for me to leave.

  1. This is what happens when parents aren't allowed to spank their kids any more. Other kids whose parents don't give a crap end up beating the shit out of each other, instead.

Way to go, conservative dummies! (Don't you remember being whipped when YOU were small?) How do you think you turned out to be such an "upstanding" citizen? It's because you got your ASS WHIPPED when you were acting like a fool.

How soon people forget where they came from...

  3. There is so much juxtaposition in these types of situations. You're at an oncology center playing soothing/healing music and people are more concerned with what happened on the bus. For me, what is more disturbing than that is how the news can spend so much time reporting on this sort of thing, yet rarely do we as Americans know what goes on in the rest of the world. We don't need to watch the bus incident 20 times in slow motion. Rather, if the network wanted to do some good maybe they could bring some light to the atrocities in the rest of the world that we ignore everyday. Even better would be if we could highlight all the wonderful things people are doing in the world everyday. Thanks for being one of those people trying to bring good things into the world. I would much rather listen to you and your guitar any day rather than watch the news!

School and Home School

Oh my. I don't have time to write this. So it will be as follows:   1. What is school for? I think that Seth has a good grasp on this at the bottom, see [1] 2. There's an ongoing debate about homeschooling vs. public schooling. 3. I agree with most things about home schooling. Which is why I take the view that my kids are home schooled 5 days a week, from 3pm to 9pm, on the weekends, and all of their vacation time. 4. Home schooling should feel like art, it's enjoyable (largely), so don't worry about overloading the tone of "school" in it. 5. Everyone's situation is different: (a) Some of us have checks coming to us from the government that give us all day to do as we please. (b) Some of us have to work long hours every day to survive. (c) Some of us have a spouse that gives us all day to do with as we please. (d) Some of us are the spouse that gives the other all day to do as they please. etc. 6. Thus, our ideals aren't applicable to everyone. 7. Th...

Is Your Government A Narcissist?

First of all, I apologize. Writing is a craft that takes ample time to do well, but I live in time and society that necessitates swift communication. The two don't go well together. I'm a single father who also looks after his elderly father, so there will be some grammatical mistakes, as well as composition related ones. Please endure with me through a semi edited writing. UNO There's a reporter who's controversial Tucker Carlson. I couldn't tell you why he's controversial, I just know that he is by how people talk about him. I also heard that Tucker Carlson is on the "far right". In our ZANY society, if you identify as the opposing party, in this case that would be "the left", it is almost socially mandatory that an individual express negativity for that person. Because if you don't someone might look at you suspiciously. DOS There's a personality disorder call "Narcissist" . They come in a couple of flavors. Tucker Car...

Does Art Necessitate Mental Unrest?

Music alone is not enough And being a film director is too much It's usually the case that there's nothing that I want to say badly enough to put myself through the labor. There was a time when I really wanted to say something, and I did. But, mental well being, in a way, quells the desire to express myself through art. Something about art has been about me not being seen enough, good enough, or just enough period. Feeling like enough kills the drive to express yourself in what David Bowie once called "such rarefied terms". I still make music, I still record music, almost never finish it, and share it with others even less. There's more to me than being a musician. I do have a love for it, but I need more. I always hated math, I've grown curious about it, and have gotten substantially better. The pandemic compelled me to become a roof salesman and to get my insurance adjusters license. I still laugh at that, but nothing is wasted. Transferable knowledge is tak...
